Program:
SIBELIUS - Finlandia
RACHMANINOFF - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
SHOSTAKOVICH - Symphony No. 5
This concert explores music's call to freedom. The rousing and turbulent Finlandia was Sibelius' nationalistic response to Russian oppression. Shostakovich's 5th Symphony gives voice to his fellow citizens' despair and secret hopes for a better world during the Stalinist purges of the 1930's, mingling tragedy and triumph in an unforgettable creation. Tackled by only the most fearless of pianists, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a brilliant set of variations, including one of the most recognizable thems in all of Romatinc classical music. Continuing our special relationship with The Curtis Institute of Music, we welcome Micah McLaurin, winner of several international piano competitions, including the Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists.
