In the Company of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder

by Charles Wilbert

Produced by Schoolhouse Players

“An Evening with Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder” consists of two companion one-act plays, entitled “Two Suits in One Act” and “In the Eyes of Wilder’s Sister” respectively.

For her tour of the United States in 1934-35, expatriate American author Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) prepared six formal lectures. The drama “Two Suits” supposes that Stein gives an unscheduled impromptu talk to a small gathering of students at a storefront college in downtown Manchester, NH –- an off-the-cuff speech in which she inadvertently reveals intimate glimpses of her Parisian life.

“In the Eyes of Wilder’s Sister” takes place on the stage of Broadway’s Morosco Theatre in September 1938. As dramatist Thornton Wilder rehearses his greeting to friends he expects later for a matinee performance of his Pulitzer Prize-winning “Our Town,” his estranged sister Charlotte storms into the theatre and accuses him of ruining her childhood.
