The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc

April 1 @ 7:30pm
Majestic Theatre Main Stage
Tickets: $25

The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is a fiddle trio from Norway, Sweden and the Shetland Islands who swiftly gained a reputation for their gripping and unique blend of fiddle music since their inception in early 2009.

Comprising Olav Luksengård Mjelva (Norway), Anders Hall (Sweden) and Kevin Henderson (Shetland Islands), each regarded as leading exponents of their respective traditions, they have found themselves in great demand throughout the world performing together as ‘The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc’

With a firm focus on the rich traditional fiddle music from where they each belong, they have developed a sound that has been described as “unique”, “meaningful”,”intense” and “invigorating”.
Their clever use of harmony, rhythm, riffs & bass lines creates a sound that leaves the listener enthralled but at the same time dumbfounded that the sound only comes from three fiddles.

In the lobby before the show, there will be entertainment from Vänta Bara, translated from Swedish as "Just Wait". Vänta Bara is a trio with Lori Prime on fiddle and nyckelharpa, Kim Majors on fiddle and Maralyn Belgique on cello. Collectively they have played various forms of traditional and folk dance music for over two decades. Their love of traditional folk music has now brought them together to explore the soundscape of Sweden. This trio is often caught playing an impromptu set of dance tunes for Norske Runddansere at the new cultural center, Nordia House, in Portland, OR. They are excited to share their music in Corvallis for a social hour in the lobby of the Majestic Theater prior to the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc concert. Don’t wait! Join them Saturday, April 1st at 6:30 p.m.

There will also be a display of Traditional Norwegian painting called Rosemaling from artist Patti Meshnik. Rosemaling is an amazing art of painting on wood. Accurate translation into English – rosepainting, quite common on the Internet translation of “drawing with a rose” the word indicates a process. This ancient art emerged in the 18th century, gained popularity in the first half of the 19th century, and is still very popular in Norway and abroad.
