Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace combines gorgeously accessible contemporary harmonies with diverse inspirations including portions of the Latin mass, poems by Tennyson and Kipling, an Islamic Call to Prayer, and parts of the Indian epic the Mahabharata.
The Adagio for Strings was first written by American composer Samuel Barber in the 1930s. He created the choral version 30 years later, and it is perhaps even more expressive than the original. In movies as diverse as Platoon and Death in Venice, the Adagio has been used to evoke feelings of sublime melancholy, yearning and heart-wrenching beauty. It is a rare treat to experience the choral version, sung live.
