Liberation: From the Reformation to Haydn’s "La Reine" with St. Martin’s Chamber Choir
PROGRAM:
- World premiere from CU Composition Competition winner
- Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Symphony No. 85 “La Reine” in Bb Major
- JS Bach (1685-1750) Cantata: Ein Feste Burg ist Unser Gott - in D Major, BWV 80
La Reine is one of Haydn’s Paris symphonies; it is so named because it was the favorite of the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. It is a beautiful and graceful work. In celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, we will also perform Bach’s cantata A Mighty Fortress is our God, which marks a liberation of the human spirit to follow one’s own consciousness. Finally, we are again commissioning a work by the concerto competition winner at CU Boulder, giving gifted young composers a significant professional and educational experience.
