San Franciscso University High School Presents:

Metamorphoses

Adapted by Mary Zimmerman from Ovid

Directed by Michelle Talgarow

“METAMORPHOSIS noun - the process of transformation. a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one.”

In Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, Ovid’s original tale is reflected through contemporary poetry. Zimmerman transforms these ancient stories to allow us to see ourselves, as we try to navigate our lives. Using imagery and a physical narrative, all set around, and in, a pool of water, Metamorphoses modernizes several familiar myths, including: The story of Orpheus and Eurydice, a love story about bringing your beloved back from the dead; King Midas, who has the gift – or curse – of turning everything he touches into gold; Narcissus who falls in love with his own reflection; Baucis and Philomen, who are gifted by the gods to lie side by side forever…and many more. As the world transforms before our eyes, we need these universal stories of love, suffering, loss and redemption to remind us of our humanity.
