Music by Leonard Bernstein, Music Direction by Jean Maxon-Carpenter

Candide is a semi-staged, concert version of Leonard Bernstein’s work – in celebration of the centenary of his birth. Candide (1999 version) is the final revision of Leonard Bernstein’s operetta, originally composed and performed in 1953.
A musical retelling of Voltaire’s satire, we follow Candide as he is expelled from home, suffers many and various misfortunes, and is repeatedly separated from his true love, Cunegonde. Through it all, and in the end, they try to remember the lesson they learned from their teacher, Dr. Pangloss: “Everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.”
Although the story is from the 18th century, with music originally conceived in the mid-20th century, the messages are still timely today.
This show is part of the Springboard Season, full of new and developing projects proposed by community and ensemble members.
