A Rose By Any Other Name:
Shakespeare brought vividly to life through the ages.
Saturday May 12th, 7:30pm
Shakespeare’s words and stories appear regularly in the theatre, and not only in his own works. Composers like Bellini and Verdi wrote operas based on his plays. West Side Story was based on Romeo and Juliet. And who knew that Shakespeare’s text could be found in Jekyll & Hyde? This multi-genre performance presents Shakespeare in many forms through spoken word and song.
Soprano Phoebe Gildea is joined by Nathalie Fortin on piano to take you on a journey from the sixteenth century through today, with guest appearances by Kella Hanna-Wayne, Dylan Stasack, and Kory Weimer.
There will be monologues and scenes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Henry V, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, and more.
Song selections include:
"Oh quante volte" from I Capuleti ei Montecchi by Vincenzo Bellini
"One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein
"Salce, salce... Ave Maria" from Otello by Giuseppe Verdi
"Romeo and Juliet" from Reefer Madness, the Musical by Dan Studney
"I Hate Men" from Kiss Me, Kate by Cole Porter
"This Can't Be Love" from The Boys From Syracuse by Richard Rodgers
