Shostakovich, Mussorgsky and Beethoven were all game-changing composers who revolutionized the world of classical music and your concert experience this evening will highlight that revolution. It will also put the spotlight on local, emerging talents who have won this season’s Young Artist Competition. You will hear the Festive Overture by Shostakovich, a vivacious and thoroughly Russian celebratory work that alternates between grandiose, lyrical and playful. Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain was one of the first tone poems written by a Russian composer and is based on the legend of a witches sabbath on St. John’s Eve. The evening closes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s first foray into the symphonic form, a form he eventually changed so dramatically that it would seem as if he invented it.
