Bakersfield Mist by Stephen Sachs

A one-act, 90-minute play inspired by the true story of a California woman who bought a painting for a few dollars in a thrift shop and thought it could possibly be a lost Jackson Pollock masterpiece worth millions,  Bakersfield Mist introduces us to two characters at either end of the social spectrum: Maude Gutman, an unemployed bartender living in a trailer park who finds the painting, and Lionel Percy, a New York-based art expert who takes one look at the painting and offers his assessment. His opinion – and Maude’s reaction to it – propels the play into not only becoming familiar with the characters and their past, but on a conversation on art and how it affects all of us on intimately personal levels. In the end, the question of whether or not the painting is a Pollock becomes incidental, as Bakersfield Mist takes us not only on a lively, fast-paced, comedic and touching examination of these two characters, but also on the nature of art itself.
