Moroccan Chaabi

AMEL TAFSOUT * 3 hr, INT/ADV

Sat Aug 3, 9:30a-12:30p

LOCATION: Smith Hall

      *      *      *      *

Explore one of North Africa's popular traditional dances, Moroccan Chaabi. Chaabi means ‘of people’ and represents the culture, voice and spirit of the common person. Chaabi is the crossroads of Arab and African influence - with similarities to Middle Eastern belly dance movements like shimmying the hips and waist and African style climactic tempo increase. Chaabi is decidedly unique.

Amel will teach students the fundamentals to start their relationship to chaabi rhythms and movement vocabulary - and be on their journey in being independent social dancers. An intermediate-advanced dancer will learn to keep "stamina" and build up tempo increase.

  • Difficulty: This is a 3-hour class geared towards intermediate/advanced level dancers, though all levels who want a challenge are welcome.
  • This class is capped at 25 students, to give students a chance to really sink into learning from our Master instructors.
  • Please bring: Your favorite reusable water container. L&C DOES NOT ALLOW DISPOSABLE WATER BOTTLES ONSITE.
  • Optional: yoga mat, dance shoes, exercise towel, pad and pen for notes
