North Africa is a complex multi-cultural region with Arab, Berber, Andalusian, and African influence. It is more than meets the eye. Berber culture, even though perceived by the outside world as just folklore, actually has a large presence in national culture. One prominent indigenous dance style in Algeria is from the Amazigh (Berber) group of Eastern Algeria called the "Chaouiya" (pronounced Sha-wee-ya). Recognized as a maternal dance - its primary muscle isolation resembles that. It is all about the literal belly. Learn traditional Chaoui rhythm and how to "bounce" your belly.
