Opus 3: after Strindberg
devised and directed by Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble (PETE)
A journey under the floorboards of August Strindberg’s chamber play The Ghost Sonata, Opus 3 explores the schism between what is spoken and what is meant, between what is seen and what is heard, between the play and the playwright. Strindberg wrote fervently of the need for naturalism in the theatre, and simultaneously scripted strange surreal masterpieces. Opus 3 will examine Strindberg’s naturalism and his dream world with contemporary eyes and ask what naturalism, expressionism and performance mean to us more than a century later. What do our choices about how to represent truth and reality reveal about us, and what secrets do they hide?
