America at 250

West Side Presbyterian Church
6 S Monroe St, Ridgewood, NJ

Ars Musica Chorale kicks off its 2026-2027 season with a first-time collaboration with the North Jersey Concert Band for a concert of music celebrating the greatest American composers. The centerpiece of this collaboration lies with Howard Hanson’s Song of Democracy, a beautiful masterwork written for the unusual scoring of concert wind band and chorus. Using Walt Whitman’s poem of the same name, Hanson sets the text with rich harmonies and clear text to showcase the optimism found in Whitman’s words. Other works will feature other American genres, including spirituals, folk songs, jazz, and shape-note singing. Come join us for this celebration for America’s musical history!

Brahms: Requiem

Saturday, April 3, 2027 at 7:30 PM

Bethlehem Lutheran Church
155 Linwood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ

Join Ars Musica Chorale and Adelphi Orchestra for a powerful performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem). This work is widely considered to be Brahms’ most important composition, and it is certainly his most personal. Instead of using the traditional Latin text, Brahms sets passages from the German Luther bible. This work was written as a comfort to Brahms during a time when he lost his mother and longtime mentor, Robert Schumann. The texts focus on comfort to the mourning, rather than blessing of the dead. The opening chorus, “Selig sind, die da Leid tragen” (“Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted”) is a far departure from the usual opening text of a requiem, “Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine” (“Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord”). Also featured are baritone and soprano solos, along with some traditional fugal passages. Join us for the epic masterwork!
