Moby Dick, Rehearsed

Based on Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Adapted by Orson Welles

March 3 - 20, 2015

Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:00pm

The Venetian Theatre

A Shakespearean company meets to begin rehearsals for a production of King Lear. The director enters and hands out scripts for a new play called Moby Dick. As the actors take up their new roles, the theatre is transformed from a simple rehearsal room into the yardarms, sails, mast, and deck of the ship that is hunting the great white whale. Based on Orson Welles’ 1955 rehearsal experiment at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London, Moby Dick, Rehearsed is a remarkable celebration of one of the greatest novels ever written and a triumph of theatrical imagination.

Jane Austen’s Emma

Based on Emma by Jane Austen, Adapted by Michael Fry

May 5 - 29, 2015

Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:00pm

The Venetian Theatre

Emma is one of the best-known and most beloved of all english novels, and Jane Austen’s story has delighted generations of readers. This new adaptation brings to life all of the wonderfully eccentric characters from Austen’s Little England as played by just five actors. “Private theatricals” were a popular pastime in the Austen family home, and adaptor Michael Fry has inventively placed his Emma within just such a setting. Sharp-tongued, beautifully observed, and with a charming lightness of touch, this is a “play within a play” which delightfully and ingeniously retains the words and wit of the classic novel. In celebration of the bicentenary of the novel’s publication.
