2014/15 Season Announced!

The Six Gentlepersons of Verona

Based on The Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare, Adapted by Scott Palmer

Proteus and Valentine are the bestest of friends…until Proteus also falls in love with the object of Valentine’s affections...and then the gloves come off.

Shakespeare’s first comedy is a madcap romp that bubbles over with the Bard’s youthful energy and also features some of Shakespeare’s most memorable lines, moments and plot devices…including “the bit with a dog…”

This world premiere adaptation will feature a cast of six women playing all 12 characters in Shakespeare’s play and playing an original score (composed by Tylor Neist of Bridgetown Orchestra) on found instruments…alongside a scene stealing performing mutt!

Using a completely bare stage and simple costuming, this adaptation will be a fast, furious, frantic tour de force of swordplay, comedy, stage combat, quick changes and...of course...“puppy love.”

“That man that hath a tongue, I say is no man, if with his tongue he cannot win a woman.”

Our Country's Good

By Timberlake Wertenbaker

Miles from their homeland, a boat full of Royal Marine officers and convicts arrives on the Australian shore in 1789, forced to create a community in a fledgling penal colony. Amid the brutal conditions of the settlement, a determined lieutenant volunteers to direct the convicts – a collection of murderers and thieves – in a comedic stage play.

Our County’s Good is a powerful examination of the transformative power of theatre, and is an adaptation of the Thomas Keneally novel The Playmaker... making it an ideal script for Bag&Baggage to end our seventh season!

With no support from his fellow Marines and the leading lady’s imminent execution, it’s questionable if the show will go on.

Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Foreign Play, the BBC Award for Best West End Play of the year (all in 1988) and nominated for 4 Tony Awards in 1991, including Best Play, Our Country’s Good is one of the most celebrated English plays of the last century.

“…a backstage play with a social conscience, demonstrating the redemptive power of theater and of education.” – The New York Times
