Three different composers capture the essence of Spain: Emmanuel Chabrier’s rhapsodic España opens the program, Nicolai Rimsky-Korasakov’s Capriccio espagñol is an exciting showcase for the orchestra, and Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole features the brilliant SooBean Lee, violin. Inspiring masterworks from American composers. Adolphus Hailstork’s brilliant Fanfare on Amazing Grace begins the concert, and Aaron Copland’s Four Dances Episodes from Rodeo includes the well-known “Hoedown.” Two works by Samuel Barber complete the program, including his hauntingly beautiful Adagio for Strings, and his gorgeous Violin Concerto, featuring extraordinary violinist William Shaub.
