Pippin
an extraordinary musical
by Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz
As the lights go down in an abandoned theatre, we meet the mysterious Leading Player as he gathers his old acting troupe to perform one last magical play. They choose the tale of the restless Prince Pippin, heir to Charlemagne’s throne, who longs to live an extraordinary life but doesn’t know how to find his “corner of the sky.” Guided by their leader, the players show Pippin attempting to distinguish himself in bitter warfare, lusty entanglements, and shrewd politics. But when he finds life is more complicated than he thought, Pippin discovers true happiness where he least expects it. With beautiful songs written by Godspell’s Stephen Schwartz and creative choreography inspired by Cabaret’s Bob Fosse, the allegorical Pippin proves a moving coming-of-age story with revealing lessons about misguided ambitions, empty promises, and unvarnished love.
