Leaves of America

Walt Whitman's Stories of the Civil War

               March 20, 21 at 8pm                  and  March 22 at 2pm

Walt Whitman’s free-verse style of writing broke boundaries and shattered the rules of what was considered “poetry” of his day. It was only after his death did his book: Leaves of Grass find its way to being canonized as great American literature. Leaves of America takes us through the journey of Walt Whitman and the American Civil War. From 1861–1865 he stayed in our nations capital caring for wounded and sick soldiers in what in what is now the National Portrait Gallery. Whitman has several memoirs recounting his search for his wounded brother, his admiration for Abraham Lincoln, and his love for his country during this gruesome period of American History. With his gift for language and his first-hand experience, we have some of the most detailed accounts of the Civil War. Complete with projections and storytelling, Leaves, blends documentary style film-making and character portrayal into an hour long theatrical experience.
