Courageous Conversations in the Midst of Cultural Collision

DONNA MEJIA * 90min LECTURE CLASS, ALL

Thursday Aug 1, 6-7:30p

By popular demand!

      *      *      *      *

Despite the media’s portrayal of the world as a very polarized and damaged place, there are many extraordinary people quietly building a society that prizes inclusiveness. There is always room for more additions to this global family of healers, so please come join the conversation. We’ll be reviewing recent developments in anti-bias work and scholarship, and examining what we can do as individuals and a community to increase peaceful coexistence. Fusion dance was just the beginning of the important work we’ve started in the world as artists.

Ally-ship takes many forms and is never a one-size-fits-all solution. Yet each courageous act of fellowship, no matter how large or small, is meaningful. Please don’t underestimate how your choices disrupt social bias and can tip the scales for a fellow human whom may feel demoralized and disenfranchised. Interestingly, you may find that you always get back more than you give. This workshop will explore definitive steps to move beyond “paralyzed empathy;” becoming effective as a listener, and act thoughtfully in our support of comrades.

The inevitability of our global citizenship mandates we set a seat at our table for other world-views and voices. Do you really wish to make a difference? Please come join a conversation that is already in progress on an international level. Your contributions and thoughts will make it better for all.

  • This is a seated lecture class, open to anyone and everyone!
  • Please bring: A pad and pen for notes, any questions you have for the instructor.
  • Stay for the free preparty on the lawn , directly after this class!

Peaceful Coexistence of the Sacred and the Profane

DONNA MEJIA * 3 hr, INT/ADV

Saturday Aug 3, 9:30a-12:30p

      *      *      *      *

What is the role of the body in the development of an inner life or spirituality? Donna Mejia facilitates this workshop not as a teacher, but as a fellow explorer in what embodied consciousness means to each of us.

Dancers have a vital contribution to make to our understanding of embodiment, evolution, and utilizing more of ourselves in all that we do. My larger agenda as a dance professor is not to create cookie cutter clones for successful stage careers. Rather, I aim to create more ambassadors in the world whom are integrated humans: emotionally brave and intellectually clear folks whom understand the body is not the obstruction to spiritual and intellectual growth Western history and religion would have us believe.

This dance workshop involves movement, discussion and reflection/contemplation time. Donna will summarize a collection of cultural paradigms about the role of physicality in our emotional, mental and spiritual evolution, and provide prompts for you to examine your own assumptions, indoctrinations and biases around working with YOUR body. This workshop provides the potential to excavate down to new levels of honesty with ourselves, fortify our spiritual bravery for the resistance we may experience, and embrace opportunities for maturation.

Participants of all belief systems, experience levels, sexual and gender expression are warmly welcomed. An open mind, a discerning and diplomatic tongue, and a generous sense of humor will make it a positive experience for all as a community.

  • Difficulty: This is a 3-hour class geared towards intermediate/advanced level dancers, though all levels who want a challenge are welcome.
  • This class is capped at 25 students, to give students a chance to really sink into learning from our Master instructors.
  • Please bring: A yoga mat, your capture materials of choice (a journal or computer for harvesting your insights and thoughts), and your favorite reusable water container. L&C DOES NOT ALLOW DISPOSABLE WATER BOTTLES ONSITE. Please dress in layers that can be added or shed as our activity level changes your bodily temperature.
  • Optional: Dance shoes, exercise towel, and an optional folded blanket (may be helpful as additional cushioning for some activities.)

Moroccan Chaabi

AMEL TAFSOUT * 3 hr, INT/ADV

Sat Aug 3, 9:30a-12:30p

      *      *      *      *

Explore one of North Africa's popular traditional dances, Moroccan Chaabi. Chaabi means ‘of people’ and represents the culture, voice and spirit of the common person. Chaabi is the crossroads of Arab and African influence - with similarities to Middle Eastern belly dance movements like shimmying the hips and waist and African style climactic tempo increase. Chaabi is decidedly unique.

Amel will teach students the fundamentals to start their relationship to chaabi rhythms and movement vocabulary - and be on their journey in being independent social dancers. An intermediate-advanced dancer will learn to keep "stamina" and build up tempo increase.

  • Difficulty: This is a 3-hour class geared towards intermediate/advanced level dancers, though all levels who want a challenge are welcome.
  • This class is capped at 25 students, to give students a chance to really sink into learning from our Master instructors.
  • Please bring: Your favorite reusable water container. L&C DOES NOT ALLOW DISPOSABLE WATER BOTTLES ONSITE.

Rhythm and Blues/Bump and Groove

DONNA MEJIA * 2 hr, ALL

Saturday Aug 3, 2:30-4:30p

      *      *      *      *

With great affection, Donna Mejia offers this workshop as a tribute to the Rhythm and Blues music of her Creole Culture. This experience will be part dance class, and part ethnomusicology!

We will explore the common denominators of blues music (the roots of contemporary R&B) as it was imported and transformed by North and West African slaves in the American South. You will be delighted to learn that some popular rhythms, instruments, and musical flavors in the U.S.A. have an unbroken lineage of influence over hundreds of years from the North African and Arabian cultures of antiquity. Fusion is as old as contact between cultures, and this workshop will address some frequent gaps of information in our own understanding of North American popular music. Our dancing will be as varied as our sonic landscape, so please come ready to explore the movement history behind our love of gritty, funky, soul-searing and syncopated music!

  • Difficulty: All levels welcome
  • Please bring: Your capture materials of choice (a journal or computer for harvesting your insights and thoughts), and your favorite reusable water container. L&C DOES NOT ALLOW DISPOSABLE WATER BOTTLES ONSITE.
  • Optional: yoga mat, dance shoes, knee pads, exercise towel,

Algerian Chaoui: Berber Dance from East Algeria

AMEL TAFSOUT * 2hr, ALL

Sun August 4, 10a-12p

      *      *      *      *

North Africa is a complex multi-cultural region with Arab, Berber, Andalusian, and African influence. It is more than meets the eye. Berber culture, even though perceived by the outside world as just folklore, actually has a large presence in national culture. One prominent indigenous dance style in Algeria is from the Amazigh (Berber) group of Eastern Algeria called the "Chaouiya" (pronounced Sha-wee-ya). Recognized as a maternal dance - its primary muscle isolation resembles that. It is all about the literal belly. Learn traditional Chaoui rhythm and how to "bounce" your belly.
