Dance & Disability: creating a culture of representation & access

NICOLE MALINOFF * 90m LECTURE

Thursday July 30th, 6:15-7:45p

LOCATION: Smith Hall

      *      *      *      *

This seated class opens with a slideshow presentation and lecture, followed by a Q&A and guided group discussion. Participants will gain tools to create inclusive dance spaces and to become effective allies to disabled people, insight on disability culture, and ways to identify and dismantle their own unconscious biases.

Nicole has been living in a disabled bodysince birth, and dancing since 2007. While her focus has primarily been in belly dance, she has also dabbled in tango, ballet, and contemporary as well as yoga and other movement practices. Though she firmly believes in the good intentions of the larger dance community, Nicole has noticed that there is a lack of general understanding and comfort in how to approach the subject of disability, especially in the context of movement. In her 13 years of attending movement classes and performing in her community, Nicole has consistently been the only visibly disabled dancer in the studio and on stage. She found herself becoming increasingly frustrated at having to devise her own movement adaptations when instructors are unable to offer them, tired of fielding unmindful patronizing comments, and tired of not seeing herself represented on stage. These experiences sparked a personal mission, to do something about it!
Nicole has spent the past several years immersed in deep thought and study on the topics of disability justice, internal and external forms of ableism, and experimenting with different inclusion practices in her own weekly dance classes. She has discovered that full inclusion is truly best for everyone and hopes to empower others to work together in promoting positive change in the greater dance community. Join the discussion, become part of the change!
