Microplastic Madness

What would you do If you found out that at the current pace our world is creating and disposing of plastic in our oceans, they could contain more plastic than fish by the year 2050? Well Fifth graders from Brooklyn were concerned and motivated enough to take on the roles of citizen scientists and advocate on multiple levels for taking plastic out of their daily lives. With stop-motion animation, heartfelt kid commentary, and interviews of renowned scientists who are engaged in cutting edge research on the harmful effects of microplastics this documentary will get you informed and hopefully as one student encouraged, “Y’all should step up yaw game!” when it comes to reducing our use of plastics.

Youth Filmmaker Showcase Volume 1

Join us for our 7th Annual Youth Filmmakers Showcase! Once again this category was quite competitive with the number of submissions we’ve received from around the world. After watching films produced by kids from 7 to 17 years old you will have the chance to ask some of them in person just what inspired their cinematic expressions?

We are honored that the young filmmakers who submit to PCFF do not shy away from serious issues which may impress, surprise and/or inspire you. Narratives with more mature content (profanity, intense bullying, stories about dating, alcohol abuse, suicide, sexual identity) are placed mostly in Volume One. Any films with mature content in Volume Two will be placed at the end of the reel.
VOLUME ONE: Multi-national / In English or with English subtitles / 85 min / 13+

Her carefree and uber-confident ways instantly stand out. From the class bully to the homeless man she befriends on the way to school, the world around Rocca can’t help but be changed by her fearless optimism and caring for others as she herself learns to adjust to the new world around her.

The stories on this reel hopefully inspire you to see/feel things in another way. They include the extraordinary measures a whale tries to help a songbird, two friends from Fruitistan who didn’t realize they weren’t supposed to like each other and tiger still waiting for his stripes.

Babe

BABE is celebrating its 25th anniversary year!?! (We couldn’t believe it either.) As Roger Ebert wrote about this unique and amazing film, “BABE is a movie made with charm and wit, and unlike some family movies it does not condescend, not for a second. It believes it is OK to use words a child might not know...and instead of the usual contrived melodrama of most kids' pictures, this one develops a story that depends on the character and upbringing of the animals involved. It knows things, and teaches lessons.” Enuf said!

Away

A fairytale-like adventure that feels like part dream, part reality. A young man crash lands on a mysterious island and has to travel across it to find his way out. The challenge is not to get caught by a giant creature that won’t stop pursuing him. Whether the creature is real or just a manifestation of our hero’s inner demons is up for debate. There is something rather rudimentary about the animation itself but the aesthetic only adds to the film’s strange and absorbing power, creating a hypnotizing atmosphere that, in its best moments, manages to spirit us away. Not a word is spoken but the film score speaks volumes.

Let's Get Animated

Animation is like magic. An animator takes a non-living thing then, voila!... provides the illusion that it now has life. Just how the illusion is accomplished varies greatly from each different filmmaker. This year matchsticks will be very much brought to “life”, the game of chess will be played in a very unique way and a filmmaker returns with her latest story told with clay-paint. These films may animate YOU to make some of your own magic!

Bodies in Motion

People express so much through their body language. Sometimes it’s planned like a dance, other times it’s a spontaneous reaction to an environment, or a protest to an injustice done. Be warned that after watching these films you might be inspired to “speak” a different body language. This reel includes a dance in remembrance of a father, spontaneous circus acts in beautiful Ethiopian vistas and even a dance inspired by a typewriter.

A Night at the Opera

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA was a smash-hit gigglefest grossing over $3 million... in 1935! (That’s STAR WARS money in its day.) To describe the plot or the style of the Marx Brothers would be an exercise in futility, since a Marx Brothers movie exists in moments, bits, sequences and not in comprehensible stories. It is impossible to discuss Groucho's dialogue without quoting it, and pointless to quote it since Groucho, Chico and Harpo’s delivery is essential to the effect. This classic comedy has been experienced by multiple generations. Make it one of yours!
