Regina Carter’s Southern Comfort

Since emerging from the Detroit scene in the late 1980s, premier violinist Regina Carter has performed with Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Billy Joel, Max Roach, and Wynton Marsalis for the 1997 production Blood on the Fields, among others. Trading the West African kora for a slide guitar on her upcoming release Southern Comfort, the 2006 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship has collected songs redolent of her father’s roots in Alabama for a celebration of the joyous music that infused her early childhood. Jimmy Mak's Monday, April 28th 7:00pm and 9:30pm

“Regina Carter creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring…taking the listener into the future of jazz.” - Time Magazine

The Headhunters have redefined modern funk, world music and jazz as one of the most innovative groups in history. Their creation in 1973 represented a major turning point in legendary pianist Herbie Hancock’s career, and the group recorded with him for several years before breaking out on their own with their 1975 release, Survival of the Fittest. They have continued recording and performing as The Headhunters with varied incarnations under the leadership of drummer Mike Clark and percussionist Bill Summers. Clark and Summers will be joined by saxophonist and vocalist Donald Harrison, bassist Chris Severin, and keyboardist Stephen Gordon. See them live at Jimmy Mak's Monday, May 15th 7:00pm & 9:30pm
