| | We are screening the latest documentary from Simcoe director Daryl Granger who brought you 'Netting the Waters' and 'Young Farmer'.
'SHOWMEN' is a documentary that documents a full year with the World’s Finest Shows, which was formerly associated with Conklin. This film provides an intriguing exploration of a traveling carnival featuring over 50 rides, game booths, and food kiosks, reflecting a significant segment of mobile carnivals throughout North America.
Beginning in January during the off-season, the film emphasizes the crucial processes of event organization, acquiring necessary permits, and managing staff, illustrating how a small town evolves into a vibrant festival.
Viewers will meet the showmen—historically called “carnies”—with a focus on using respectful terminology. Their passion and expertise are vital for animating the carnival experience. The documentary also delves into the rich heritage of the midway, tracing its roots back to 1893, while shedding light on the financial realities of carnival operations, including costs for attractions, labor, insurance, permits, and maintenance. This offers a genuine glimpse into the challenges of carnival life. Whether you’re an avid carnival fan or simply curious, this documentary provides an entertaining and insightful diversion from the ordinary.
