Brahms’ First Symphony
March 30, 2019
Avondale United Church 7:30 pm

Canadian violist Sharon Wei joins us to perform Max Bruch's "Romance for Viola and Orchestra", Op.85 (1911).

Johannes Brahms began to work on his first symphony in 1854. It debuted in 1876. During that time, the perfectionist Brahms, ever cognizant that he was expected to compose music worthy of his reputation as Beethoven’s successor, destroyed many drafts. The long awaited Symphony No. 1 is an orchestral masterwork, paying homage to Beethoven in several themes. The concert will begin with the overture to Carl Maria Von Weber’s opera “Der Freischutz “.
