Pat Mac Swyney, DAD Drone Tuning for Tenor Guitar
Looking to spice up your Tenor beyond do-re-mi major scales and common 4/4 rhythms?
In this workshop, Pat will break down the seemingly complex time signatures and exotic Near Eastern scales/modes of traditional music from the SW European Balkans, (Romani, Macedonian, Greek, Bulgarian, etc.) in a way that will make sense to everyone… and yes, this means you.
For melody players, we will cover a few core makams (modes/scales) common throughout the Balkans, and learn a few traditional melodies and basic improvisation within makams like Hijaz: D Eb F# G A Bb C D. For chord players, we will learn to chord a few “complex” rhythms and have you rocking in 7 & 9 like a Balkan goatherd. The workshop is open to all tenor tunings and extends an open invite to any wind, string or percussion players who might want to join in and learn something new. | Buy Tickets

Brian Oberlin, Connecting Chords
Strumming chords on the Tenor Guitar sure is fun, but there is any easy way to advance your accompaniment and musicianship skills by playing short musical lines in between the chords. This workshop will delve into that very topic. We will discover accessible and fun methods to connect chords that are used in the blues, swing, bluegrass and folk music. These connective lines are essentially tiny solos and can also serve as an intro to improvisation without the daunting 16 or 32 measure commitment. It will also improve your listening and theory skills. Charts will be available in notation/tab and chord shapes for GDAE and CGDA Tenor guitars. DGBE Tenor players can benefit from the workshop but there will not be chord shape charts or tablature. | Buy Tickets
