Old Dogs on the Porch is a new play by Herb Childress, written through our Ten Minute Plays process.

The end comes for another generation of a Vermont family farm. The next generations wrestle with the line between loyalty and opportunity and the boundary between self and family. A poignant look at life in a small town, with themes close to home.

Information

Old Dogs on the Porch is the culmination of a multi-month project supported by the Vermont Community Foundation's Arts and Social Cohesion grant.
We began by soliciting writers from the region to submit a 10-minute play in September, offering a writer's room in community setting. 23 writers submitted plays; eight were chosen to be read at our November annual dinner theater event at Stone Valley Arts in Poultney.

From those eight, Herb Childress' play emerged to be developed into the two-act play you will see. He expanded from three old friends to an extended family and a hospice nurse.

Community participation has been paramount to this project, from the open initial readings of the eight plays to the first public reading of this one, with talk-backs and input forms all along the way. There will be a talk-back after this performance; we hope you stay, and stay invested in the process of creating theater from the stories that bind us all together.
