UCC Theatre Arts presents

The Lion in Winter

by James Goldman

The Lion in Winter is a sharp dramatic comedy about the ruthless and conniving Plantagenet family that ruled England in the 12th and 13th centuries and were the inspiration for the wildly popular Game of Thrones series on HBO.

The cast of seven includes Henry and Eleanor's sons, Richard the warrior, Geoffrey the intellectual, and John the king's favorite; as well as Phillip the boy king of France, and Alais the French princess.

Sibling rivalry, adultery and dungeons – The Lion in Winter is a modern day classic. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action – the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family who are locked in a free for all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom, as well as King Henry’s paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, “every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family is no exception.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

by Tennessee Williams, directed by Benedict Andrews

Thursday, March 8, 7:00pm and

Friday, March 9, 2:30pm

Centerstage Theatre
Whipple Fine Arts Building
Umpqua Community College

Presented by UCC Theatre Arts

Tennessee Williams’ twentieth century masterpiece Cat on a Hot Tin Roof played a strictly limited season in London’s West End in 2017. Following his smash hit production of A Streetcar Named Desire, Benedict Andrews’ ‘thrilling revival’ (New York Times) starred Sienna Miller alongside, Jack O’Connell and Colm Meaney.

On a steamy night in Mississippi, a Southern family gather at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell. Brick and Maggie dance round the secrets and sexual tensions that threaten to destroy their marriage. With the future of the family at stake, which version of the truth is real – and which will win out?

Captured live on stage, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof will screen in cinemas around the world from 22 February 2018.

Please note that the stage production has an age guidance of 15 and over.

Step aboard the luxurious SS Italian Castle and join the passengers in this delightfully naughty British farce set in 1936.  You'll need a life vest to stay on top of the laughs as two playwrights navigate the rocky relationships between their composer, the leading lady, and her acting partner.  Top it off with a cabin steward who drinks everything that is ordered by the guests, and you have a recipe for pure fun.

Directed by Handy Barker
