| Black Curtain Theatre: Perfect Arrangement
By Topher Payne
Tagline: The 50s were only fabulous when no one was looking….
September 27 & 28, 2025 Sat and Sun 7:30pm and Sun 2:00pm$12 adults, $10 students
It’s 1950 in Georgetown and new colors are being added to the Red Scare. Two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, have been tasked with identifying deviants within their ranks. There’s just one problem: Both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover-up for their own careers. Inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement, Perfect Arrangement merges madcap sitcom-style laughs with provocative drama as two “All-American” couples struggle to maintain their cover – and their sanity – in 1950s America.
*This production includes use of homophobic language indicative of the period.

“[A] clever canapé of a comedy... Mr. Payne is a deft and witty writer.” – The New York Times
“Usually a playwright has to choose between writing a laugh-out-loud comedy and a very serious drama. Topher Payne has written both with Perfect Arrangement.” – TheatreMania
“As hiding gets harder, pitch-perfect comedy ensues: slamming doors, strange disguises, preposterous excuses... Eventually, the four must decide whether face-saving domestic lies are worth it, or whether ostracism beats living in fear. In our own era of surveillance and paranoia, their mid-century problems don’t feel so far away.” – The New Yorker | Buy Tickets |

Whitney and Max live in their own, imaginary worlds. They are both patients in a clinical trial at Johns Hopkins Hospital experimenting with a new drug – a treatment that will cure them of their schizophrenic dreams and dissolve the worlds into which they retreat. With their memories progressively dwindling as the pills take effect, Whitney and Max agree to preserve each other’s creations by exchanging stories and recording the details of what they hear. As the act of sharing and the drugs’ effects replace
dissociative fantasy with vivid emotion, the two stumble into mutual respect and sweetly fall in love. When the end of the study, and the continued obligation to medicate, puts both worlds and the relationship in further peril, Whitney and Max must decide whether to cling to the happiness they have built or abandon it in hopes of a “normal” life.

| Black Curtain Theatre: The Best We Could (a family tragedy)
By Emily Feldman
Tagline: (a family tragedy) is really like the tagline…
March 21 & 22, 2026 Sat and Sun 7:30pm and Sun 2:00pm $12 adults, $10 students
In this funny, wise, and heartbreaking debut from Emily Feldman, a daughter’s road trip with her father becomes a theatrical journey across more than just state lines. Though 30-something Ella has nearly given up on life, she agrees to accompany her father Lou on a long-distance trip to adopt a rescue dog. Guided by a narrator called Maps and interspersed with memories and phone calls from Ella’s mother, Peg, their journey reveals hard truths as their pasts slowly rise to the surface. Is “the best we could” good enough, especially when the inevitable is right before our eyes? And if we don’t choose to acknowledge its eventuality, can we really say we didn’t know anything when it happens? A very funny, achingly sad tragedy that will keep you thinking long after leaving the theatre.
