When it opened in 1943, this play, the first collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, changed the face of musical theater forever, giving birth to the format of the modern “book musical.” For the first time, dialogue, music, and dance worked in concert to inform character and create a cohesive narrative. Directed by Scott Weintraub and performed by 16 conservatory students, accompanied by a full orchestra comprised of EMMI students, this hysterical and heartbreaking story of romance in the Oklahoma territory on the verge of statehood in 1907, is the first time a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical has ever been presented in Crossroads 49 year history! 6 performances only!
