Mathis Picard is a French-Malagasy pianist and composer who moves between jazz, classical tradition, and global influence, pairing his own compositions with imaginative readings of Ellington, Monk, Bach, Chopin, and Ravel. Jazzwise has called him a rising star. He has worked with Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter, Christian McBride, and Cécile McLorin Salvant, recently toured Asia with his trio, and has been named Musical Director for the upcoming revival of the Tony Award-winning musical Ain't Misbehavin'.

Picard is no stranger to Middlebury. He first played Town Hall Theater as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center, then returned twice more for solo concerts. This time he brings his full trio, in his fourth appearance here in as many years. Picard returns the next morning to lead a festival master class on creativity.
