Johannes Vermeer left behind a small body of work and even less information about his own life, which is part of what keeps people fascinated by him. This film goes looking for him anyway, filmed inside London's National Gallery, New York's Met, and other collections in the U.S. and the Netherlands that hold his finest paintings, alongside a detailed biography of the artist and his time. Live music from the Academy of Ancient Music, drawn from the period, plays under the paintings throughout.

Art historian and broadcaster Tim Marlow guides the film, bringing in other fine art authorities along with novelist Tracy Chevalier, whose bestseller Girl with a Pearl Earring, inspired by Vermeer, became the film of the same name.
