DOC WEEK: THE STRINGER

A former Saigon photo editor plagued by a 52-year secret courageously makes a stunning admission, setting off a gripping two-year investigation into five decades of buried secrets behind one of the Vietnam War’s most iconic photographs. Acclaimed war photographer Gary Knight and journalists Fiona Turner, Terri Lichstein, and Lê Vân embark on a relentless search to locate and seek justice for a man known only as “the stringer.”

The work of photographers during the Vietnam War exposed the horrors committed against the civilian population to a Western audience largely unaware of the scale of the atrocities. The iconic photograph, The Terror of War, also known as Napalm Girl, was shocking in its depiction of the violence experienced by children, prompting global protests and calls to end the war. But a claim by a former Associated Press photo editor raises doubts over the image’s origins. Bao Nguyen’s film follows a relentless journey to find the truth, locating a photographer known only as ‘the stringer’ who claims he took the photo, throwing the AP photographer credit into question. In following this investigation Nguyen’s film tackles racial injustice and journalistic ethics as it questions why Vietnamese photographers’ essential contribution to this conflict have not found their place in history.

LOST NATION

Followed by a discussion with filmmaker Jay Craven in person!

“Lost Nation” is a Revolutionary War-era action drama set in the early upstart Republic of Vermont.  “Lost Nation” stars Irish actor Kevin Ryan (“Copper,” Harry Wild”) as Vermont founding father and rebel schemer, Ethan Allen, who leads resistance to New Yorker land claims, launches an ill-fated attack on British forces in Montreal, and leads invasions by his Green Mountain Boys into Yorker strongholds of Guilford and Brattleboro. At every turn, Allen navigates thick entanglements with allies, enemies, and family.

“Lost Nation’s” parallel and intersecting story features Kenyan actress Eva Ndachi (“Beautifully Broken”) as Lucy Terry Prince, whose poem, “Bars Fight,” about the 1746 Deerfield Massacre, is the first known work of African American literature. Enslaved in Western Massachusetts at the age of 3 - for 30 years - Terry then settled with her family on a Guilford homestead carved out of the forest by her husband, formerly enslaved frontier transport operator, Abijah Prince.

Like Ethan Allen, the Princes found themselves caught up in turbulent times that threatened their prospects for the land and freedom they sought.  Like Allen, Lucy Prince upset the status quo in her assertive use of early Vermont’s legal and political systems to defend her family in the face of pressure and threats.

THE LIBRARIANS

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Kevin and Jackie Flynn’s:
Brothers From Another Mother Comedy Tour

Both Flynn’s began their comedy careers in Boston’s red hot comedy scene in the late 80’s. It was not long before they were both headlining comedy clubs from NY to LA and everywhere in between.

Jackie Flynn currently is a regular character in the Hit TV series LOUDERMILK. Jackie recently completed shooting,  THE WORLD’S GREATEST BEER RUN in Thailand , starring Russell Crowe, Bill Murray and Zac Ephron, due in theaters and Apple TV summer of 2022.

Jackie is truly a "comic's comic" whose refreshingly unique brand of sarcastic observational humor puts him in a class all his own, apart from the many derivative cookie cutter comics plying the airways today. Audiences young and old appreciate his wit and rapid-fire "take no prisoners" delivery.

Kevin Flynn, as a writer, actor, producer and comedian, has done it all. As an actor Flynn has appeared in a number of movies including the  The Heartbreak Kid with Ben Stiller, Me, Myself and Irene with Jim Carey as well as starring as one of  the series “most popular boyfriends” as voted by viewers, on HBO’s hit series  SEX AND THE CITY.  Kevin is also the Executive Director of The Nantucket Comedy Festival in support of a non-profit “Stand-Up and Learn”, an ongoing project that teaches school kids self-confidence through stand-up. Kevin is currently touring nationally with his latest one-man show, FEAR OF HEIGHTS-A VERY FUNNY PHOBIA.
