Summer Shorts 2022

It's back!  The popular ORIGINAL ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL we have offered for most of the last ten years.  Sponsored by OPEN DOOR FELLOWSHIP, a Unitarian Universalist church group, six exciting new works will see their WORLD PREMIERES July 22-31.  All performances will be at TRINITY CENTRE, 407 W. Fifth St.

Cash prizes will be awarded the pieces selected as BEST PLAY and AUDIENCE FAVORITE.  The plays in this year's line-up are:

Showtimes are 7:30 PM July 22, 23, 29 and 30; and 2:00 PM July 24 and 31.

Little Shop of Horrors

FEED ME!  Everybody's favorite singing plant is back!  This production of the wacky musical based on a classic B Movie features young players, age 11-19.  Join Seymour, Audrey, and of course AUDREY II as they come to life once again in the hands of our talented young cast!

Directed by Hadassah Jeunene and J. B. Key, the show is sponsored by INDEPENDENCE BANK, and made possible in part by THE B. J. KILLIAN FOUNDATION.  Performance dates are as follows:

July 29-August 7, with Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. The show will be at THE EMPRESS THEATER, 418 Frederica.

Improv Workshop with Lindsay Marie

Lindsay Marie is an improviser, comedian, actor, and writer hailing from the Midwest. She is an alumnus of the world famous Second City Conservatory, Second City Grad Revue, Second City Improv Program, and the Upright Citizens Brigade Long-Form Improv Program. She has performed short and long-form improv, sketch comedy, characters, and stand-up all
over the Midwest.

Saturday, August 27, Lindsay will offer TWO CLASSES in Improvisational Acting.  The first one, INTRO TO BASIC IMPROV FOR TEENS, will be from 1:00-4:00 pm at the EMPRESS THEATER.  This workshop is for ages 14-18. Class size is limited to 12 people. The fee is $25.00.

Directing 101

“The Process of Directing a Play: Simplifying the Complex.” Or...“So you want to be a Director? Are you insane?!?!?”

This workshop is conducted by TWO veteran Wes Bartlett, and breaks down the gargantuan task
of directing into simple, chronological categories. Participants may include experienced to
aspiring directors, or anyone who would like to learn a little more about what it is to be in charge
of a production.

DIRECTING 101 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Phase 1, Preparation, begins with how to choose a play thru auditioning.
Phase 2, Implementation, covers the first cast meeting thru opening night.

Topics include (among others) how to select a concept, working with designers, actor coaching,
and staging techniques.

You can expect audience participation, handouts, theatre games, and an entire, detailed outline of
topics at the conclusion of the seminar.

This workshop is for ages 16 through adult. The fee is $10.00.  Cass size is limited to 20.
