Harry Allen and the Four Others

Sun, Jan 13 at 4pm

Harry Allen is a rara avis in the World of contemporary Jazz. His musical roots are not, like most of his saxophone peers, in the styles of John Coltrane or Michael Brecker, but in the mainstream school Stan Getz, Al Cohn or Zoot Sims. Amongst his musical idols are also several of the great saxophonists of the swing era, like Ben Webster or Lester Young.

Fascinated by the cool sounds and relaxed swing of the legendary saxophone section of Woody Herman's orchestra of the late forties (Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff), nicknamed The Four Brothers, Harry has organized a band with the same instrumentation (three tenors and a baritone, plus a rhythm section), and has written all new compositions and arrangements for the group.

The resulting band (which Harry ironically calls Four Others) is one of the most interesting projects to have seen the light in recent years, incorporating the modern improvising skills of some of New York's most acclaimed contemporary saxophone players (like Eric Alexander, Grant Stewart and Gary Smulyan) to the classic sound of the swing era big bands.

The band has appeared in Concerts and Festivals in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and the USA, getting great reviews and accolades.
